Functions:-
1)The skeletal system provides support.
2) It protects vital organs.
3) It helps in movement and storage of minerals.
4)It helps in the formation of blood cells.
There are 2 major regions of the skeletal system:-
1) Axial skeleton- It includes the skull, spine, ribs and the sternum.
2)Appendicular system:- It includes the girdles, limbs and the joints.
What Is The Bone Made Up Of?
Bones are basically made up of two minerals:- calcium and potassium.
The outer surface of the bone is called periosteum. It is a thin dense membrane that consists of blood vessels that nourish the bone.
The next layer which is diaphysis is made up of compact bone. It is smooth and hard and helps in the lenghtwise growth of the bone . Within the compact bone, there are many layers of spongy bone that are not quite hard as the compact bone but protect the innermost part of the bone
The epiphyses are the ends of the long bone. They comprise of the spongy bone instead
of the compact bone.
The Articular Cartilage covers the external surface of the periosteum. It is a glass hyaline cartilage
which provides a smooth slippery surface that decreases friction.

Ossification is the process of formation of bone in which the cartilage is covered with a bone matrix and then turns into bone
