We have more than 600 muscles in our body and they make up 40% of our body
Functions:- Muscles perform the function of movement, maintenance of posture, generation of heat and stabilisation of joints. The three types of muscles are:- 1) Skeletal Muscles- They are present in all the bones and also some facial tissues. They are voluntary, striated and single. Also, they are cylindrical in shape and multi nucleated.
2) Smooth Muscles- They are present in all internal organs of the body. They are involuntary, no striated and single. They also have a fusiform shape and are uninucleated.
3)Cardiac Muscles-They are present in the heart They are involuntary, striated and have intercalated disks. They have a branching chain.
Structure- Muscles are made up of myofibrils where the thick myofibrils are known as myosin filament where as thin ones are known as actin filaments. Sarcomere is the contracting unit of the muscle and sarcoma is the outer membrane which protects the muscle.
